The idea of establishing a Gendarmerie Museum to reflect the historical, social, cultural, and technical development of the Gendarmerie from its founding to the present day, to showcase its activities, heroism, and duties throughout its history, and to collect, preserve, and pass on all kinds of artifacts related to the Gendarmerie to future generations, was first raised in 1995, and work on establishing the Gendarmerie Museum began in 1996.
The Gendarmerie Museum opened to the public in its current building on November 21, 2005. On July 12, 2007, with the amendment to the Military Museums Regulation, the Gendarmerie Museum gained the status of a "First Class Military Museum" open to the public.
